Somewhere along the way r2i stopped being practical and especially now since both children have graduated from college and are working.
I have enough money ($13M +) which is a combination of Real Estate, stocks, cash and 401k and can retire when and where I want to. Funnily, now that I can retire, I still want to keep working for another couple of years and maybe retire after I turn 60.
The lesson learned for me is that there are no incorrect options whether r2i or LIA.
From a financial perspective, at some point we all get to mise-en-place. Everything will be in place based on your requirements and living means. While it can be an interesting discussion with friends/family, everyone's requirements are unique and they will likely have a very different view
Congratulations !! Being FAT is generally frowned upon, however not in case of FATFire :)

This just shows some people have the human capital to make way more money than they will ever need. Making more money than what you need is not as harmful as making less money than what you need, but then it just shows that money is one very important dimension in our life and people who dont have enough money, their entire life is spent worrying about this dimension.

But those like you once you cross that level then the money dimension becomes irrelevant and life becomes a quest to find out what other dimensions matter.

Evenually, nothing matters, because everyone lives around 80 or whatever, and no matter how much money you made or didnt make, how much you enjoyed your life or suffered, it eventually doesnt matter.

In fact I would say, someone who has been suffering their entire life, as they get into old age and the end is near, probably brings joy that it is finally all going to end, whereas someone who was always been on the quest of happiness and fulfillment might actually feel disappointed that it is all going to end.

But anyways, death is the best equalizer and the most lovely thing and thank God that so far humanity hasnt managed to conquer death. If and when that happens it is going to be chaos.

I have been reading a topic like this from the previous R2I forum since 2007 :-). I tried to apply the same logic, aka 'how much is enough', it never worked.

So, since I want some definitive answers, this is what I'm doing (planning to r2i next year, God willing).

I have asked my family what is their bare minimum, their reply: roof over head + car (luxury) + child's education + health when I get sick

My expectations are: Dal rice + a floor to sleep that's almost it.

I'm not going to compare how rich others are, infact some of the folks I know back home are stinky rich.

With that philosophy, I was able to calm down and hopefully getting some clarity on the next steps.

I plan to write my own blog next year as my plan materializes.

this is the pravasi paradox.. if one had this realization that this is all it takes to make us happy - one wouldn't have killed self to get to the other end of the world and put everyone thru further torture of going back to the original status quo.. but c'est la vie.. you have to go on the journey to get to this.. in the end all will be well, if it's not, it's not the end.

Love your gadgets there. Thanks for the picture.

I could do with few of those colors too, it would be cool if they go away before the nagging-phase starts :-). Some automated system would be nice the moment nagging starts colors get replaced.

$3M for us. We are at about $2M and probably would be coasting already if it were not for the constant layoff threat and AI threat to career. We want to hustle to $3M and then coast.

People define coast differently. For us, it means not constantly interviewing and only focusing on job. And the kind of job too. Had enough of startups and FTE with perf reviews and that nonsense. Coasting will mean only contract jobs.

I am surprised you feel the constant threat of layoff and AI, given that you have been always upskilling/leetcoding etc.
I have been totally opposite, the last time I learnt something was SQL some 18 years ago and now it has been ages since I did any coding.
Yet, I have survived in banking, with just 4 jobs in the last 16 years. Current job is 9 years already and all I do is restart the server, when someone complains of performance issue, lol.
