Life with tiktok

Post by Returning_Indian »

I am officially addicted to shorts. Insta reels, YT shorts, FB shorts, I can spend 4-5hrs at a stretch. It has ruined me. It's affecting my social life as I find it boring after first few mins while socializing and want to start watching shorts instead. The dopamine release that comes with reels of few seconds cannot be achieved while talking to others unless I am drunk. I find it difficult to concentrate on work which is even more boring than socializing. Not only this, I then go and enact reels with my son or wife and they are also sick of 44yr old behaving childishly in the house. I find myself laughing loudly alone in the room. All my songs playlists are now a result of songs that I see in reels. I find tv shows and movies to be boring now and it's difficult to hold interest for such long time. They need to come up with some meds to stop this addiction.

But it's a good jugaad for when I retire. I can just spend majority of the time watching reels mindlessly. All this is a step closer to the scenario from movie Idiocracy.

Back when it was called browsing and internet was our slave and not the other way around, it was lot more fun. Our wandering mind used to take us places and we used to learn a lot - for instance, start with Perth test, wander to Sachin's century at Perth, Wander to what happened in 1991, wander to how Indian govt had to mortgage gold to stay afloat, unemployment during that time, Globalization by Manmohan Singh, Rajiv Gandhi assassination, rise of LTTE in TN , wander to my alma mater where I graduated from that year and so on. Now internet takes over and it feeds us mindless monotonous stuff and, in this case, it would feed me all centuries by Sachin, one after another!

@returning_indian you are atleast acknowledging it. But most people dont even know that they are addicted, including me. In the past I used to follow bloomberg news, forums etc for hours. But now I am mostly getting into reels and shorts and I now I cant even sit through 1 movie or watch news or video, I get easily distracted and bored. It is clearly the reels to blame, to take away our patience from us.

Not sure what the solution is. Alteast we have already made it in life. But imagine kids who still have so much hard work to do ahead of them, how will they be able to do it?

Tiktok is banned in India. When I launch it says app is not available. But Reels is good enough to keep us busy. People go to such length to make those short videos.

Reels are brutal - wife is on it a lot and most of them have popular songs in the background and I start singing along but have no interest in watching any of them. The brutal part is when she moves to the next reel and the song changes, and I need to quickly recalibrate. It's the same annoyance others get with the 'remote-gods' while watching TV.
