Emotional support can be provided only by family members and that too mostly blood relatives (son/daughter). For folks without kids old age is going to be hell with no support during critical condition. Govt and private services can only provide to some extent as they have to cater to thousands of other customers. With the breakdown of joint family network seniors are going to get hit the most. I am working on a solution how to fend it off for myself/spouse.

In US such support will cost a bomb, one reason for me to retire in India.

I was stressing the fact the young retirees need to be givers of emotional support a long time before they can become takers - especially in my DW's extended family with multiple folks in 80s and 90s! Not necessarily a bad thing, but something NRI retirees need to be aware of.

Meenakshi - not sure why she stayed in the US for so long, probably making a few bucks teaching dance for desi kids with her neighbors cursing her for too much traffic during the weekends. Now she is moving to India to seek 'creative satisfaction' - it seems you already got your share of creative satisfaction by comparing her with you :)

When condition is critical, kids or no kids does not matter. Battle against an ageing body has to be fought alone. Atul Gawande's book shares accounts of both cases (kids vs no kids, US vs India). They are all miserable.
