'X'perts are quick at bringing out the new fad word FOMO for everything (mostly as feel good for themselves), without even trying to guess what do these people fear of missing out! Are they being told that there would be a red-carpet welcome in the US or are they being told they can lead a better life by taking a risk and work hard and don't have to run a corner sweet shop rest of their lives.
Having to sell a treasured piece of land for 40L does not seem 'rich' to me.

They are not being told anything. They are finding out for themselves. Every Indian has a smartphone and a cheap data plan. They can see the lives of people in the US now and how much better it is on average. They want that too. Its aspirational. Those with brains spend 40 lakh on MS, those without spend it on illegal path.

I would like some stats on marriage based GCs in US. That is the ultimate end goal of illegal immigrants. On reddit itself, out in the open, out of every 10 posts on the r/uscis subreddit, 3 or 4 are about people who arrived 2 months back either illegally or on tourist visa getting married and filing i485, with most getting GC within a year of stepping foot in the US.

This seems like a good route for Latinos because they have a huge network in US with easily available marriage partners. Not so sure about Indians.

This is what I have been saying all this while; Lots of Indians are very rich and have resources to fund 40L-1cr to go abroad. It is fomo. That's all. Grass is green in the US.

"Father had a sweets shop but son was too ashamed to sit on it. That’s why spent ₹40 lakhs to go to the US illegally.

Problem is not unemployment . Problem is the attitude of these dehatis."
People do stupid things for stupid reasons. I guess we will never know. I suppose craze is more prevalent in Punjab and Gujarat where it's a matter of show off that you stay abroad. Atleast in Europe/UK they have a process of legalization after you stay for 20yrs.
US doesn't have anything. You will never be able to meet your family again. Financially, it doesn't even make any sense.

If I had 40lakhs, I would have never left. All I needed was 15lakhs in 2001. 11lakhs for a flat in Delhi, 4lakhs for a car. I wouldn't have missed all the family events that happened in India.

What if most of your extended family is already in the US as is the case with most Gujjus and Punjabis? :)

15 Lakhs was a lot of money in 2001. My annual pay ranged from 15K to 1.2 L from 1991-1997 before reaching 2L for a couple of months before I left India.

What one needs now is the question, not what one needed in 2001.The inflation adjusted figure even according to GOI would be four times that amount but in actual terms it would be at least 10 times, that is assuming one can get a similar apartment for 1 Cr now!

If your extended family is in US then you can just wait for 10-12yrs and get a green card. You don't need to cross illegally.

What if they themselves are illegal?!
Even if they were legal, it would take a long time for sponsoring siblings now. The priority date is 15th Aug 2006.
