How much is enough for your preferred lifestyle that let you coast in job and not worried on loosing Job.
I would say 2 million with house and new car(s) paid off…
Before SS (social security) kick in - 100% expenses from savings
After SS eligible - 40% coming from SS and 60% expenses from savings
How much is enough for you to coast and not worry about job

There is no specific number since it depends on the Indvidual's spending and tolerance levels.
The job becomes optional when your investments make more you much more money than your expenses.
The job becomes redundant when your investments make more money than your job itself.

This is ture... I think I am reaching towards that path, thanks to the stock market... Taking SS at 62 and done.. I am not a big spender, so I should be able to manage. Though a kid's marriage can put a hole, in your savings,.SAPPORO wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2024 8:01 am There is no specific number since it depends on the Indvidual's spending and tolerance levels.

Maybe you are not thinking thru, if kids choose partner that you approve then you will shell out expenses with blessings otherwise..

Re: How much is enough for you to coast and not worry about job
I was at a wedding over the weekend that even had fireworks and don't think it would have costed more than 100K since the invitees were only close friends and relatives. Unlike in India, no need to invite groom's sibling's friend's cousin's mom and her throwing a fit that she was not invited! Weddings are like Bollywood movie shootings, it's much cheaper, targeted and concise if venue is outside India than in India! Regarding approvals, the fact that parents are invited to their child's wedding and even asked to give a toast is good enough sign that all the parties can tolerate each other.dicky_bird wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2024 1:00 pm Maybe you are not thinking thru, if kids choose partner that you approve then you will shell out expenses with blessings otherwise..

Re: How much is enough for you to coast and not worry about job
For BA living, with a paid off house I will need min $10M to lead same lifetsyle like I will be able to do in India.
After certain age (60+), I would like to come down on elevator as climbing stairs is already hurting my knees. At 8-830am want freshly made idli/vada/upma/dosa/poha with fresh chutney and hot sambar for BF. Don't need all at one day, just one item/day so I get variety. This should be available on dining table without me or my wife lifting a finger.
Same for lunch - 3 days SI and 4 days NI - all hot/fresh kept ready by 1pm. Evening snacks or light food is ok. I am ready to pay for all this services but it will cost me upward of $10M if it runs for 20-30 years. Folks like Pichai and Nadella may be living this kind of lifestyle but their NW is way higher.
Problem with BA is here everyone is rich. With 10M you fall under LIC and will have to fight for these service providers. Dudes with higher savings will offer better salary for these workers and they will scoot.
In India I am in the process of making such arrangements and hope to complete when I move back permanently. Cost there is 1/10th of Bay Area. Who in his right mind will live here, worry about running out of money or drag myself to load/unload dishwashers at ripe old age of 75?

Don't need $10M for having reliable supply of Idli, Vada, Sambar, Bhatura in BA- have you heard of Priya Living in Santa Clara?old-spice2 wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 2:58 pm For BA living, with a paid off house I will need min $10M to lead same lifetsyle like I will be able to do in India.

I visited that place in 2015. It is a bad place to retire. The community is housed in an old abandoned industrial building. They do not provide any food. There is one young lady who orders food from nearby restaurants.SAPPORO wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 5:31 pm Don't need $10M for having reliable supply of Idli, Vada, Sambar, Bhatura in BA- have you heard of Priya Living in Santa Clara?

Then I visited their Fremont location few years back. I discovered it is not a RH but a normal apartment complex. Found few gora families living there. When I asked the receptionist what is the provision for food, she showed the kitchen and said "Please cook yourself".

Did not know that, so as usual all that glitters is not gold! It looks like you may have to move next door to me for food, if you would like to stay back in the US! https://anandvihartampa.com/amenities/old-spice2 wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 12:20 amI visited that place in 2015.
