Post retirement life in India

Post by old-spice2 »

Update: Though it is Lakshya's diary and mine is gone in the underworld of Internet.

I am now officially retired at 60 and back in India. Busy with cleaning up and settling down process. Wife is still in CA. Plan to be here for next few months doing things like buying a new car, selling my existing villa and move to a new apartment. Villa is 20+ years old and needs lot of renovation. After looking at some model new apartments I decided it is time to move to newer property as they are of western standard like dry bathroom, shiny walls, good floorings, digital camera and iPads on door to see who is on other side, association provides non stop water/power, some aunties going around in hot pants for evening walks and so on.

Sometime I realize I am now a senior citizen and should not look at aunties, it is time to chant Ram Charit Manas and related stuff. Will take some time to change old habits.

Living in India post retirement is great. After quitting my job I stayed back in US for one week. Man it was terribly boring and if I continue I would end up in a mental asylum. My wife noticed that and pushed me to India to prepare the groundwork. I may come back in 2-3 months to sell cars, pack up rest of the household stuff, sell things like tv and ship the container. Then it is Good Bye to California and I am done with US. If anyone is ready to exchange their Indian PP with my US PP, I am willing to make a deal.

Post retirment life in BLR - join Bajrang Dal. Though age limit is 35, will call Amit bhai to get an exception. In the afternoon will visit Cubbon Park. If I find couple doing PDA, will give mangal sutra to the guy to tie on lady's neck. If he refuses then will give Rakhi to the lady. They have to pick one.

Then in the evening walk to Church St and sit outside various clubs. Will chase any women wearing jeans. Need to follow Indian sanskar. I was in Delhi two weeks back, visited Hanuman Temple in CP. Purchased an orange flag to carry it around. My wife was with me and is now scared. She says it is ok to visit Ram Temple, chant Ramayana but not this. She says I am getting dangerous as I grow old.

BTW I voted for Trump and now running away from America leaving you guys at his mercy. LoL!

Happy retirement! What kind of T voter are you? At your age, T was busy making Barron with a hot model with stormy on the side and you're just content ogling at old aunties!

I think it is ok to ogle at aunties until you are 85.. you are only 60 so at least another 25 years of enjoyment should be fine.. at 85 there may be a problem with blood flow to the heart if you still ogle.. so safer to give that up..

More than that vision may be poor. Even kaam wali bhai may look like Rashmika. Not worried about getting tight slap as may have lost all the teeth by then.

What are you doing at 4 in the morning? Learn to sleep until 8 to perfect retirement! Retirement is about conquering time and not making more of it!
That is my habit since 20s. Effect of studying late in the night. Even in CA, used to get up at 3am, make filter coffee and watch Adani TV. Then go back to sleep for second installment at 5am. I sleep in small 3-4 hours slots. That is why it is difficult to stay in any relative's house. I get up in the middle of the night and cannot make coffee as I don't know their kitchen layout. Try to stay in a hotel most of the time to avoid this issue.

VG guys are after me to provide financial advise since I became a HNI with recent surge in our company stock. BTW for the first time sold bulk of company's options and RSU at peak, or close to peak. I did that in view of upcoming retirement 6+ months back and VG started calling me for advice. But what advice can they give as their plan is a cookie cutter for Americans (white) living in US. They talk about health insurance, LT care, Medicare, and fine wine/dining etc. In India my office visit is less than copay in Amrika. I have set aside 25L for each for emegency surgery kind of stuff.

Even after that 90% of my savings is intact. Need to find ways to spend. Nowadays my diet has gone downhill. Cannot finish one masala dosa, leave half of it or buy one to share with gharwali. We buy one thali and split it. The restaurant guy will think we are cheapskate but I don't like the idea of wasting food, cultural upbringing. For upmarket place I get thali to go and share inside the house. Upmarket = Saravana Bhawan.

My alcohol consumption is also down. Can drink only 150ml of beer and 1/2 rounds of Scotch. Lost most of the friends in US, Either they do not respond positively or avoid me. So life was getting lonely but in India all my old buddies in BLR and Delhi are happy to see me. Two weeks back was in Hyd for school friend's daughter wedding. Met many of them and had a great time.

My lifestyle is like this - while travelling in India stay in five star hotels as the standard of anything below is yucky. I need dry bathroom and nice smooth TP. I do carry one Charmin Ultra in the backpack which I preserve for use outside. Stay in Marriott type of place but do not eat there. Breakfast charges are like Rs 3K and since I eat only half MD or one idli, cannot justify that price. So head out for street food for Rs 100. That is what I did while in Delhi. The receptionists were looking why this guy is walking out at 8am. Plus I enjoy street food more than 5* cuisine. Garam garam chai in Delhi winter alongwith bread pakoda is something to die for.

You could have ordered via Zomato while staying in 5star. I did that quite a bit when I stayed at Taj. I felt so cheap while carrying those Zomato bags up to the room as delivery boys aren't allowed inside. But ofcourse food was super awesome so weird cheapness didn't bother as much after eating. Bought my own alcohol instead of going to their bar. Wife was with me so it's not like I was gonna get lucky there.

Good choice to move apartment. I feel apartment living is much better than house in older age. Amenities and staff at fingertip, security, social life, ample parks space maintained privately, clean etc etc. In addition, lot of rip messages when one pops. WhatsApp group is super active all the time. Just ensure that you join all of them. Usually there many many groups within society. Since whatsapp increased to allow 1000 to join, it has become draconian.

Isn't that dependent on whether DIL wants them there. It's better to have your own life and to not suffocate the kids.

i agree about not suffocating the kids.. but isn't it part of the desi culture to be near/ around if the kids need us.. another country/continent seems to far to be able to cultivate any kind of relationship with the ones we invested so much in..
